I have a slogan for the "Super Committee."  Take from the needy & give to the greedy!
2  All Around Vermilion County / In My Humble Opinion / Re: County Market vs. Walmart on: July 05, 2011, 02:46:15 pm
My wife & I have shopped County Mkt. for years. Not so much anymore.I no longer find the good buys I once did. Part of the reason is I believe they donate foods soon to expire to the food bank.No doubt a good cause, nor am I against it, but I use to keep the freezer full with deals like"Oscar Meyer"smoked turkey for 50 cents a pound. I'd buy 30 or 40 of them. Same with the beef franks,$1.00 a pound. It was those kind of deals that kept me going there 3-4 times a week.

I never knew just what unadvertised deals I would run into.A lot of the food I'd give away to family members who we knew could use it.Now they are like shopping at the ritz! Beef has went thru the roof at Cty.Mkt.We now shop more at "Aldi & save a lot"For many years Cty.Mkt.did have some great buys, but not so much anymore.

Excellent idea! Looks like this silver carp issue is getting very serious. If they are in the Wabash,no doubt they are in the Ohio river,Mississippi,& all the connecting rivers. Probably they would make better pet food than what we can buy now. The Chinese wheat gluten disaster shows that they put garbage in the pet food. The silver carp would probably be fine for pet food. It is safe for human consumption.

 Terry,

I sure hope you are right. It will be interesting to see if gas prices take a sharp decrease as a election year approaches. When I was in mgt.we called the final year of a union contract,"A healing year".The very people who got rich with big bonuses & perks were suddenly the workers friends.

Picked 30 gray mushrooms today within 30 feet of our back door. Got 26 first pick, went back out later & found 4 more. All of them were small in size.

Just my opinion but the politicians no longer care what we want.Every President since I can remember was going to get us off of foreign oil.
No form of energy is acceptable to the environmentalist groups. My opinion is pres.Obama is doing what all the others have done. Talk a good talk but do nothing.
8  All Around Vermilion County / News Around Vermilion County & Illinois / Re: Illinois Minimum Wage on: February 14, 2011, 01:23:42 pm
As a past asst.plant mgr. I can say this for corp.America. Take from the needy & give to the greedy! I wasn't a mgr.in some mom & pop outfit either. Our company had several plants & millions in revenue. Raising the min.wage may mean our stockholders may have to buy one less Porsche.

Go to Cty.Mkt. & look at the price of tomatoes or green beans. If it's getting picked for near nothing by illegal immigrants, why is the price so high? Fact is business uses the,cut our taxes & we will build more golf courses. In turn we can go out & caddy for them for a cheap wage.

I can say this for sure. The cost to us for our product ran from $26.80 to $34.00 per piece depending on production. When it reached "John Doe" consumer it was $275.00 to $360.00. Ill. is not business friendly because big business wants every penny of profit it can get. The bottom line is P&L.(Profit & Loss) This line of "Join our family" is hogwash.

I know of things that co.execs.could have went to prison for. Things like charging a co.for week-ends not worked & other practices. Business no longer wants to make a 5 to 8% profit. They want to lie, steal & cheat their way at employee & cust.expense. Wall street.Enron & a host of others have proven that point.

Mrs. Music Man & myself already have our house for sale. 7.65 acres 2 blocks or so from the lake. Problem is it's only worth half of what is was 20 years ago. We have kept it up but our neighborhood has numerous for sale signs around us. Be a good time for the Danville mayor to raise the gas tax while politicians are on the bandwagon to bleed us dry.

Maybe we can be the first to hit the $5.00 a gallon mark! Maybe can take the bus to the new riverboat! Hmmmm... Only problem is no money left over to **** with. Disposable income going to gov't.on steroids! Let us see, we have the lottery, riverboat in the works. Only leaves us drugs & bordello's to go.Can't afford all the prescripion drugs I should have & I'm too old for the other!

I feel like staying around Danville is like having had shares in Enron. Danville has lot of good people,it's good politicians I find in short supply. At least our kids are raised. Will have to discuss the motor home lifestyle with our pet dogs.Sounds better & better to us all the time. Come to think of it even the dogs are taxed! They never have any money either! I wish I was 16 again when I knew it all instead of decades older when I don't!

 DJ,

Got a kick out of your graphic! Maybe Franklin School was another dimension of the "Twilight Zone!"
11  Other Categories / RELIGION - PSYCHOLOGY - PHILOSOPHY / Things I was told over the years. on: December 03, 2010, 04:01:40 pm
1. My grade school teacher at "Franklin School" told our class we would be driving a nuclear powered car
by the time we graduated from high school.

2.The lottery would solve the schools financial problems once & for all.

3.Energy from the Clinton power plant would be almost to cheap to even meter.

4.We would lose our dependance on foreign oil. Numerous politicians & Presidents made that statement.

5.We would have a base on the moon.

I'm sure many in the forum can think of things they were told that never happened over the years.
These are a few I can remember. Would like to hear things others can remember.

6.The most devastating of all......Their realy is no Santa Claus! Merry Xmas to all on the forum!

I realy wish I had not used the word "selfish" in my post. What I meant was I will not compromise when it comes to my soul. Here I am selfish.  I am truly afraid of the lake of fire. I truly love my wife but she comes in 2nd to the creator.
13  Other Categories / RELIGION - PSYCHOLOGY - PHILOSOPHY / Re: Do you believe there is a God? Why or why not? on: December 01, 2010, 10:42:18 am
I believe 100%.Selfish or not I do believe.  As per your question DJ yes I believe the bible stories. One thing about Jesus is his actions were witnessed by multitudes of people. We do have actual eye witness accounts. Each individual must decide whether to believe or not believe.

I was a amateur astronomer & once owned a 13.1 inch telescope. I have "Carl Sagans".."Cosmos" book. Isaac Asimovs books & numerous others. I may have not spelled the names right but I read the books. Seven theries exist on the universe creation. Big Bang....Steady State...Expanding,etc. None involve the creator.

You can go back to the "Scopes" monkey trial & earlier to find disagreement on this subject. I wonder how many people know that "Bertram Cates" who was on trial for teaching evolution was from Danville,Ill. One can look this up on the internet. The movie "Inherit the wind" was based upon that trial. I'm not 100% sure his name was Bertram Cates,it may have been changed for the movie.

The real tradgedy of religion to me is that so many have died flying the religious banner. I have my beliefs but certainly would not try to advance them thru violence. My wife & I had dinner with my athiest nephew & I sure wouldn't want to beat him into submission. We discuss religion but nobody gets radical.

I choose to believe for a most selfish reason. I'm out nothing if I am wrong in my belief. The non-believer will pay a most terrible price if they are wrong. I have a relative who is a athiest. I've heard the explain the dinosaurs & his other arguments.

My answer is I can't. Might be one reason it is called faith. I am amazed a athiest can dismiss eye witness accounts so easily. Feeding the multitudes out of a few fish & bread, parting the Red Sea & raising the dead is pretty heavy stuff.

I heard a person of science say Jesus wasn't really dead when he was entombed. The cool air revived him & he just walked out. It is known his tomb was guarded by "Roman Guards" The explanation is they were asleep. The penalty for sleeping on guard duty was death. Anyway I choose to believe in God,period.

Good point Terry. Problem is we have the foxes guarding the henhouse.
