Keeping the leash short and having her walk beside you is the proper way to walk a dog.  My last dog was a Great Dane that was trained by a professional trainer.  To heel properly the dog should walk beside you with it's nose even with your right leg and your hand should hold the leash just above the collar.  Letting them run ahead on a long leash only encourages them to pull you along and gives you no control when  you come upon people or other dogs.  Even tho you are on wheels the principal is about the same.  You are walking her, not the other way around!

It was a pleasure to walk my dog.  She weighed close to 125 pounds, but because we were well trained, she never pulled me around, and because she was close to me I never had to worry about her chasing cats or frightening people with her size.
