Im sorry tough love has to be this strong. Im tired of people trying to sell me link cards for half price, people buying steak and ribs when im buying chicken (hell im paying for that steak and eating chicken) , and the kicker is when I see them buying other things that I cant afford. Something has to be done. Us working folks cannot keep paying for 50 other people to eat and sleep. If they cant afford to feed and cloth their kids than they would be better off with foster families. Im sorry.... I have no pitty at this point. Some of these families have generations of welfare. It has to stop. Most of us are struggling to get threw these rough times. And guess what? We are working instead of doing nothing and collecting a check. You want to see how to bankrupt illinois quick? Every one quit their jobs and sign up for link and public housing. What a kick in the ass that would be to the state.

You basically inherited your employment. What about the struggling individual who has been working for years only to find their job to go south? Alot of people who have the Link card to make up the difference doesn't come close. Alot of people live according to what they made. If you earned enough to afford a car payment for a new car then more power to you. When you no longer have that job there goes the car and the payment to. Alot of people relocate to where jobs are plentiful.
Yes there are those who abuse the Link card and there will always be those kinds of people. I agree with Terry, what about the children? If their parents test positive for drugs the children must be dragged away from the only home they know and you think your taxes are high right now? You better rethink your position again Sir because that means there will be alot of Foster children at tax payers expense.

I'm sorry Cleaning Lady, what has that got to do with anything? At least he's working, paying taxes and contributing to society. He is not out on the street holding his hand out, expecting something to be put in it.
I sure did not inherit my employment. I worked hard for almost 24 years, and I will now enjoy my pension. I am not done working tho. I have a part time job to make some extra money to put in Savings to help pay my house off quicker.
Granted, there are some people who can not work and have to be on public aid, but there are many who simply refuse to work, and expect to have everything handed to them The only time I have accepted any type of money from the government was when I was in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club, when I was on un employment right after I left the military, and on State disability when I had a heart attack in June of 06. Other than that, I worked for every penny. Believe me, there were many times when the wife and I ate peanut butter and jelly or spam sandwiches to get from paycheck to paycheck.

And your point is?
I simply stated there will always be people who abuse the system. Drug testing those who receive Aid of any source will not be the solution to anything. In my opinion it will be the beginning of a multitude of problems people would not be prepared for. I'm simply saying be careful for what you wish for. I also would like to see a drug free society but by testing individuals who receive any kind of assistance check will be opening a pandora's box.
The only reason I mentioned his enherited employment was when he referred to generations of Welfare recipiants. What he is saying is the truth but jobs in Vermilion County are not as plentiful as they once were. It would be nice if there were more family run enterprizes then there will be a more generations of working people.

That depends on whether or not we should drug test welfare recipiants.
This is not the thread to discuss this particular issue. I'm just saying a victimless crime is the reason our prisons are experiencing over crowded. Prisons are for Murderers, rapist, thieves, thugs. A person who test postive for pot can be a life changing situation.
Enuff said on this thread but just had to respond to Marigolds post.
We need to rid ourselves of the Golf Course and the inhouse Engineer and crew. We pay for outside Engineers anyway so I say get rid of the Engineers. Have the County take over the Library. We can no longer afford to fund it. Let it be on the County's budget and not Danville.

I am appauled my your statement that I inherited my job. I have worked hard for 30 years to get where I am today. Nothing has been handed me ever. I worked to pay for my first car, I worked to be able to go out with friends, I went to college to get the knowledge for my job, and I could go on. I am the same as any other working folk. Nothing has ever been given to me. Even now im like most of you, living paycheck to paycheck. I have lost thousands on my wage this year because of the economy. So dont stand there and judge me. When I was in high school and college I worked two jobs and went to school. Do you rembember Mr SteaK? I was the head waiter there for over 5 years. I have people ask me all the time to buy their link card. That is wrong. Furthermore I would rather pay for the kids to go to foster care instead of paying for people that dont work, buy drugs, buy alcohol, sell their link card not worrying about their kids food, shoot people, stab people, and so on. If we take care of this situation, the crime rate in danville would slow way down. I am scared sometimes when I see 2 shootings or stabbings in one week. Are you? Danville used to have a very low crime rate. Now you cant go past bowman at nite. This is a shame. And I realize your going to say it is part of the times., bull! Its because of the fluctuation of people moving in from chicago bringing their problems with them. Its sad to see all these young people getting killed over drugs or stupid stuff. I truly believe we need to take action soon or danville will be like south chicago. I have grown up in this area and am sad that you have to look behind your back at all times to stay safe. Cleaning lady, you can believe what you want but if you know me the statement you made would not have been made. I have always worked for my job and have always given back to the community. (volunteer as a EMT for the ambulance service) So please dont say things that are not true. If I have done wrong, I can take you telling me so, but not when its not the truth.

Woooa, Hang on there cowboy. I never said you were not a hard working nor uneducated person. You are most likely everything you say you are so you don't have to defend your character or credibility to me or anyone else. You took offense at one small comment I made but didn't care enough to ask me what I meant by it. I simply said you inherited your job and that is the truth.
Not very many individuals have the same opportunity's as you. I didn't mean that in a bad way and it's unfortunate you took it as such. Ofcourse you had to be educated in the line of work that you do or you would not be worth a hill of beans.
You know Todd it seems you are always on the defense when it comes to comments made on a forum. You need to stop and re-read what is written before you jump on people.
Furthermore as I stated earlier you must be careful what you wish for. If you are as educated as you claim you must realize what kind of effect it would have on our economy if all the children of parents that tested positive were to be placed in foster care. You are bitching about how hard things are now? Hunny, you aint seen nothing yet! So be that educated person you claim to be and read carefully before you jump on someone for a comment they make. I made an acurate comment about your inherited job. Is there something in that statement not true? It's a family run business and you so happen to been born into it. In most cases when you get educated in a field there is no guarentee there is a job out there waiting for you. I was not knocking you or your business. I was simply stating a fact. If we were to have more family run busineses we would have less generations of people on welfare. If you can't see the truth in that statement you Sir need an eye exam. Todd I have patronized your business many times over the years so in effect I have put money into your pocket. In return you want to take that money I had just given to you and spend it on the thousand of children who were displaced into Foster homes because Mom and Dad tested positive for weed. Now you think about that for a moment and if you still feel you are justified in your thinking, I give up. It would be my opinion you are not as smart as I thought you were. An educated man with no common sense is useless.
As I said I am done with this topic on this particular thread because this has nothing to to do with the city's budget. Ofcourse you have the right to respond as I know you will but I will not type another word in my defense. I know what I said and meant and I stand behind it.

Hello, I am new here and appreciate the dialogue.
Marigold, I too believe that welfare recipients should be drug tested. They should be "work ready". If they do not maintain themselves as work ready they will never move forward. Regarding weed, it is not addicting to the point that they can't stop. Should they have their children removed because they smoke pot? Probably not. Should they have to retest in 60 days and if they are still positive have their benefits removed? Absolutely! Question their parental judgment and maybe they will think twice about their poor choices. The welfare of the children should be looked into. I would hope that if I were to be arrested for drugs and had small children someone would care enough to look into the safety of their home environment. Poor or Rich there is no excuse for breaking the law. If you can't afford milk, you can't afford weed. When did we as a society stop believing that there may be consequences for our actions? IMHO it is a crime to allow this abuse of the system to continue. There are rules, regulations, checks and balances for people receiving unemployment compensation. Why not the same for the welfare recipient.
Life, Liberty and the PURSUIT of Happiness. Pursuit is an adjective, it requires action. It is not an entitlement.

Ok, it is a noun, so I will bow to the experts, but I still think it should be a verb...a noun, I was taught, is a person, place or thing, something tangible.
Here is the definition according to dictionary.com:
–noun
1. the act of pursuing: in pursuit of the fox.
2. an effort to secure or attain; quest: the pursuit of happiness.
3. any occupation, pastime, or the like, in which a person is engaged regularly or customarily: literary pursuits.
